Nearly thirty years ago a group of Steiner/Waldorf Schools and the Adult Education Centre established the Federation of Rudolf Steiner Waldorf Schools in New Zealand to facilitate exchange of information, to promote the education and safeguard its integrity and to be the body that would represent Waldorf Education in the legal realm when interfacing with organisations such as the Ministry of Education and the Crown. As such, the Federation represents the interests of Steiner schools that are part of the state system along with independent schools. In New Zealand over 3,000 children attend Steiner schools or early childhood centres.
Since this inception many more schools have been established and joined the Federation. Our schools include a variety of licensed early childhood centres who are also members of the Federation along with many stand-alone early childhood centres sprinkled around New Zealand
The Federation Directory lists the full compliment of Federation members and provides contact details along with specific websites.
As the educational environment has developed in New Zealand the Federation has increased its interaction with other agencies, such as the Ministry of Education, the Association of Integrated Schools and the Education Review Office.
The Federation is committed to enhancing the profile of Rudolf Steiner (Waldorf) Education in New Zealand. Federation members, whilst all working out of the educational indications of Rudolf Steiner interpret these in their individual ways. This diversity of form is considered a strength of the movement and the independence of each member is respected. Members collaborate in a number of forums including professional development encounters and meetings convened by the Federation where issues of strategic significance are debated.
